A shocking incident took place at IIT Bombay boys hostel where a former M.Tech student was caught secretly recording videos of students in the bathroom. He has been booked by the police, raising safety and privacy concerns on campus. Check complete details below.

A 32-year-old man, who had recently completed his M.Tech from IIT Bombay, has been booked by the Powai Police for allegedly recording videos of students while they were bathing inside a campus hostel. The incident reportedly took place on October 12, 2025, at hostel number 14 within IIT Bombay premises.
According to police officials, the accused completed his M.Tech in June 2025. He had returned to the campus to meet a friend and was also exploring job opportunities during the ongoing placement season. During his stay at the hostel, the suspect is alleged to have used his mobile phone to secretly record videos and take photographs of students in compromising situations.
The act came to light when one of the hostel residents noticed the suspicious behavior and immediately alerted campus security. Following this, other students intervened, caught the accused red-handed, and handed him over to the security personnel on duty.
A police officer involved in the investigation confirmed that an internal inquiry led to the discovery of several such videos on the suspect’s mobile phone. However, authorities also revealed that neither the students nor the security staff were initially willing to file an official complaint against the individual.
After conducting a more detailed inquiry, the Powai police recorded the statement of an IIT Bombay security officer. Based on this testimony, an FIR was officially registered under Section 66(e) of the Information Technology Act, which deals with capturing, publishing, or transmitting private images without consent.
The incident has caused concern among students, many of whom now fear the possibility of being unknowingly filmed. “There’s a lot of anxiety on campus. We are worried about how many people might have been targeted,” said one student, expressing dissatisfaction over the lack of clear communication from the administration regarding the situation.
In response to the growing concern, IIT Bombay issued an official statement clarifying their stance. “Our initial information suggests that the individual in question is not currently a student of IIT Bombay”, the institute stated. “Our security team has handed him over to the Powai police station. The matter is under active investigation”.
